Leo Hillinger is a visionary entrepreneur and winegrower whose passion for viticulture has earned him international recognition. His estate, which today comprises an impressive 100 hectares of vineyards, is renowned not only in Austria but worldwide for its excellent wines. These wines are exported to over 20 countries around the world, underlining the global presence and popularity of the Hillinger brand. Hillinger’s focus on sustainable viticultural practices and organic production plays a key role in ensuring that his wines impress with their exceptional quality and purity.

Following years of apprenticeship in Europe and California, Hillinger purchased 12 hectares of vineyards, thereby laying the foundation for his successful winery in Jois, which opened in 2004. The business has expanded to include several wine shops and bars across Austria and a long-standing business relationship with the Constantia Glen winery in South Africa. In 2012, Hillinger was named ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ by Ernst & Young, highlighting his outstanding role in the wine industry.

Hillinger Small Hill Red is a carefully crafted cuvée made from 50% Merlot, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% St. Laurent grapes. This wine is matured in stainless-steel tanks, which emphasises its fruitiness and purity. After maturation, the wine is bottled and has an ageing potential of up to 3 years. Its structure and balanced composition make it a versatile accompaniment to a variety of dishes.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Hillinger Hill Side Red displays an intense, deep ruby red colour. On the nose, complex aromas of dark berries such as blackberries and black cherries unfold, accompanied by spicy notes of pepper and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and round, with juicy fruit notes and a fine tannin structure. The finish is long and pleasant, with a lovely spiciness and a hint of vanilla resulting from barrel ageing.

The Hillinger Hill Side Red is a perfect accompaniment to hearty meat dishes such as beef steaks, lamb or game. The wine also pairs superbly with hearty pasta dishes served with tomato sauce or mature cheeses. This red wine is ideal for festive occasions or as an accompaniment to a cosy dinner, offering a perfect balance of power and elegance.
