The Kerschbaum Opera 2021 is a red wine cuvée from Central Burgenland with a distinctive character, impressing with its depth, structure and remarkable elegance. The long-established family-run Kerschbaum winery has for years been one of Austria’s leading producers of high-quality red wines – with the Opera, it presents a blend that masterfully combines expression and harmony.

The blend consists of 60% Blaufränkisch and 40% Merlot – a combination in which the Blaufränkisch sets the tone with its spice, structure and freshness, whilst the Merlot lends the wine dark fruit, body and soft contours. The grapes, carefully harvested by hand, underwent gentle, spontaneous fermentation on the skins for 21 days, lending the wine density and depth. It was then aged for 18 months in new 500-litre oak barrels, which further enhances its complexity and ageing potential.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Opera 2021 displays a deep, dark ruby-garnet colour with violet highlights. On the nose, it reveals a finely balanced interplay of aromas of dark berries, heart cherries, subtle spice, a hint of cedarwood and a touch of chocolate. On the palate, the wine is dense, powerful yet well-balanced, with velvety tannins, elegant fruit and well-integrated oak notes. The finish is long, silky and characterised by ripe fruit and spicy nuances.

Acidity: 5.5 g/l

The Kerschbaum Opera is a versatile dining companion that pairs superbly with terrines, succulent pork and veal dishes, as well as with risotto with mushrooms or full-flavoured cheeses. Served at 16 °C, the wine is at its very best – a powerful, refined red wine with depth and character, offering great pleasure both on its own and with fine dining.
