The Franz Hirtzberger Grüner Veltliner Rotes Tor Federspiel DAC 2024 is an authentic expression of the Wachau’s wine culture and comes from one of Austria’s most renowned winegrowers. The ‘Rotes Tor’ Lager, named after a historic town gate in Spitz an der Donau, is considered one of the finest plots in the Wachau. Here, the vines grow on stony, partly barren terraced soils with a high proportion of primary rock, offering ideal conditions for mineral-driven wines with depth and character.

This Grüner Veltliner belongs to the ‘Federspiel’ quality category, which stands for balanced, medium-bodied wines with a classic alcohol content of 12.5 % vol. The grapes are selectively harvested, gently pressed and matured in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness, purity of flavour and varietal character. The style is clear, precise and straightforward – typical of Hirtzberger, typical of the Wachau.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the wine glows a pale straw-yellow colour with greenish highlights. The nose is characterised by fresh apple notes, subtle white pepper and a hint of citrus. On the palate, the Veltliner is dry, spicy and lively, with an invigorating acidity, an elegant texture and a mineral backbone. The finish is clean and lingering, with the characteristic sophistication of the Wachau region.

Ideal with Austrian cuisine such as fried chicken, Wiener schnitzel or Tafelspitz, but also with grilled fish, asparagus, herb risotto or Asian-inspired dishes. The Veltliner is a versatile accompaniment to food, impressing with both light, everyday dishes and fine dining menus.
