The Penfolds BIN 138 Shiraz Grenache Mataro 2020, 14.5% ABV, 0.75 l, is a red wine from Australia with a distinctive character, which impressively demonstrates how skilfully tradition and modern winemaking can be combined. The renowned Penfolds winery, founded in 1844 in South Australia, ranks amongst the world’s best-known and most respected producers. With BIN 138, Penfolds pays homage to the classic Rhône blends, which take on a unique character on Australian terroir.


The blend consists of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (Mourvèdre) grapes. The grapes come from old vines, some of which are over 60 years old, cultivated in various vineyards in the Barossa Valley. The wine is aged for around 12 months in a combination of new and used American and French oak barrels. This lends the wine structure, depth and subtle toasted aromas, without overpowering the varietal fruit. The result is a complex, dense and multi-layered red wine that impresses with its finesse, spice and elegance.

Tasting Note

In the glass, Penfolds BIN 138 displays a deep ruby red colour with purple highlights. On the nose, aromas of ripe cherries, dark berries and plums unfold, accompanied by spicy notes such as liquorice, black pepper and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with dense fruit, silky tannins and a fine balance of freshness, spice and oak. The finish is long, harmonious and complex.

This red wine pairs superbly with hearty meat dishes such as grilled beef, rack of lamb or game. It also comes into its own with braised dishes, Mediterranean stews or spicy pasta dishes with meat sauces. Cheese lovers will also enjoy it with mature hard cheese or aromatic blue cheese. Served at 16–18 °C, it reveals its full depth, making it ideal for both festive occasions and enjoyable evenings in good company.
