Description
The Douglas Laing Big Peat The Winter Edition 53.6% ABV 0.7 l + GB is a powerful, limited-edition special release from the legendary Big Peat range, renowned for its unmistakably peaty character and maritime intensity. Bottled at cask strength and without any additives – uncoloured and non-chill-filtered – this edition embodies the pure, unadulterated essence of the Scottish island of Islay.
For the Winter Edition, Big Peat carefully selected Madeira wine casks that had previously held a three-year-old wine made from the Tinta Negra grape. This special secondary maturation lends the robust Islay malt a seductive depth and a hint of sweet elegance that blends perfectly with the smoky, peaty base. The result is a whisky that masterfully combines maritime freshness, sweet maturity and intense smokiness – a true taste experience for lovers of authentic Islay bottlings.
With an alcohol content of 53.6% ABV, this whisky is presented at its natural cask strength: full-bodied, complex and with that characteristic wildness that has made Big Peat a cult classic. Its notes of salty caramel, vanilla and maritime freshness blend with soot, coal dust, ash and phenols, whilst subtle hints of sticky caramel, crème brûlée and candied orange peel lend a luxurious, warming depth.
Tasting Note
Colour: Pale gold with an amber sheen.
Nose: Maritime freshness with notes of smoke, soot, vanilla, salted caramel and a hint of Madeira-like sweetness.
Palate: Full-bodied, oily and complex, with peaty smoke, phenols, sweet malt, caramel, crème brûlée, molasses and candied orange.
Finish: Intense, smoky and long-lasting, with notes of coal dust, ash, wood smoke and a hint of vanilla.
The Douglas Laing Big Peat The Winter Edition Madeira Cask Finish reveals its full character when enjoyed neat or with a drop of water to perfectly balance the sweet, fruity Madeira flavours and the peaty depth. It pairs superbly with smoked meats, strong cheeses, dark chocolate or desserts featuring caramel and orange. It is also ideal as an accompaniment to a smoky cigar.
