W. & J. Graham's Late Bottled Vintage Port 2018 20 % is a premium Late Bottled Vintage Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal, produced from grapes of the exceptionally concentrated 2018 vintage. The grapes come mainly from Graham’s own estates, Quinta dos Malvedos and Quinta do Tua, supplemented by batches from Vila Velha and Vale de Malhadas. The blend consists predominantly of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, with smaller proportions of Sousão, Alicante Bouschet, Tinta Amarela and Tinta Barroca. Following a spring with high rainfall, the 2018 vintage benefited from a hot, dry late summer, which favoured even ripening and high grape quality.

A characteristic feature of a Late Bottled Vintage Port, or LBV for short, is the extended ageing period prior to bottling. Graham’s LBV 2018 matured for around five years in large oak casks in Graham’s historic lodge, dating from 1890, and was subsequently bottled ready to drink. Unlike a classic Vintage Port, it does not need to be decanted before drinking. With an alcohol content of 20 per cent and presented in a generous 1-litre bottle, this Portuguese Port from the 2018 vintage combines intense fruit with freshness and structure. Once opened, it remains enjoyable for up to around six weeks if stored correctly.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the W. & J. Graham's Late Bottled Vintage Port 2018 displays a deep, concentrated dark red colour. On the nose, there are notes of blackcurrants and blackberries, accompanied by dried mint, eucalyptus, liquorice and floral hints of rockrose. On the palate, juicy dark fruits unfold, featuring black plum, cocoa and a subtle hint of white pepper, underpinned by remarkable freshness. The finish is expressive, balanced and long-lasting.

Graham’s Late Bottled Vintage Port 2018 pairs particularly well with dark chocolate desserts and semi-mature and mature cheeses such as Cheddar or Manchego. This LBV Port from the Douro is also an excellent choice with blue cheese, chocolate tart or a hearty cheese platter. It is, moreover, ideal as a digestif and for quiet enjoyment after a meal. Graham’s recommends serving the LBV at room temperature; serving it slightly chilled also brings out its freshness very well.
