The West Cork MARITIME Single Malt Irish Whiskey Virgin Oak Cask Finished Limited Edition is a characterful single malt Irish whiskey from the south of Ireland. It is produced by West Cork Distillers in Skibbereen, County Cork, an independent Irish distillery whose location, not far from the Atlantic coast, shapes the maritime character of the range. This single malt is made from malted barley, which is initially matured in oak casks after distillation. The whisky then acquires its distinctive character through a finish in new, previously unused oak casks – Virgin Oak Casks. The intense contact with fresh oak brings additional spice, vanilla and toasted notes to this Irish single malt.

As a limited edition from the West Cork Maritime Collection, this bottling combines traditional Irish whisky-making with a distinctive cask finish. Virgin oak, in particular, differs significantly from previously used bourbon or sherry casks, as the distillate interacts directly with the fresh wood and its toasted aromas. This gives the West Cork Virgin Oak Cask Finished Single Malt additional structure and pronounced woody and spicy notes. With an alcohol content of 43 per cent and a 0.7-litre bottle, this bottling remains both accessible and expressive. The West Cork Irish Whiskey is therefore particularly suited to lovers of Irish whiskies who wish to specifically compare different cask types and finishes.

Tasting Note

Colour: Warm gold with amber highlights.

Nose: Malty and well-balanced with vanilla, fresh oak and subtle toasted notes, accompanied by sweet spices and a hint of fruit.

Palate: Smooth and full-bodied with creamy vanilla, malt and spicy oak, as well as subtle notes of caramel, toasting and fruit.

Finish: Long-lasting and spicy with oak, vanilla, malt and dry, lingering toasted notes.

The West Cork Maritime Virgin Oak Cask Finished is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C or with a few drops of still water. The spicy oak and vanilla notes pair well with grilled meat, mature Cheddar, roasted nuts or mildly smoked dishes. Desserts featuring caramel, vanilla, apple or nuts also complement the influence of the virgin oak casks well. For whisky tastings, this limited edition is particularly well-suited for comparison with Irish whiskies finished in bourbon, sherry or other casks.
