Description
Description
Der Eichenwald DAS HOHE ROSS Merlot 2023, with an alcohol content of 13.5% vol. in a 0.75-litre bottle, is an expressive Austrian red wine that captures the full potential of the Merlot grape variety with elegance and depth. Ageing in large wooden casks and used barriques lends the wine structure, complexity and a delicate smoothness, without overshadowing the fruit. This combination of ripeness and freshness makes the 2023 vintage a perfectly balanced example of its variety, harmoniously combining both rich fruitiness and elegance.
With this Merlot, the Eichenwald Winery demonstrates a fine sense of balance and craftsmanship. Careful selection of the grapes, gentle processing and the judicious use of oak result in a wine that is approachable yet full of character. With its dry style of vinification, refined tannin structure and medium body, this Merlot epitomises modern Austrian red wine enjoyment with international appeal – authentic, precise and characterised by a clear sense of origin.
Tasting Note
In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red colour with dark highlights. On the nose, dark berries, fresh plums and a hint of black olives dominate, lending the wine depth and spice. On the palate, the aromatic Dacapo takes centre stage, with the fruit setting the tone, accompanied by invigorating acidity and a finely woven network of tannins. The structure is clearly defined; the body is medium-bodied and appears harmoniously balanced. The finish is smooth, precise and long-lasting, with elegant fruit and subtle spice.
Acidity: 5.1 g/l
Residual sugar: 2 g/l
The Eichenwald DAS HOHE ROSS Merlot 2023 pairs superbly with grilled beef, game dishes, roast lamb or spicy stews. It also reveals its full character when paired with pasta in a rich tomato sauce, lasagne or risotto with porcini mushrooms. Its dark, fruity aromas also harmonise beautifully with mature cheeses and Mediterranean cuisine, such as dishes featuring olives, rosemary and thyme. Served at 16–18 °C, this Merlot is equally impressive on festive occasions and as an elegant everyday wine. Thanks to its delicate balance of fruit, spice and structure, it offers long-lasting drinking pleasure and demonstrates just how refined yet approachable Austrian Merlot can be.
