The Gaja Sperss Barolo DOP 2020, with an alcohol content of 14 per cent by volume, comes in a 0.75-litre bottle and is an iconic Barolo from the heart of Piedmont, bearing the unmistakable signature of Angelo Gaja – one of Italy’s most prominent winemakers. It comes from the Langhe wine-growing region, specifically the Serralunga d’Alba vineyard, which is renowned for producing powerful, structured and long-lived Barolos. The wine is made exclusively from the noble Nebbiolo grape variety and impressively demonstrates how Gaja combines tradition and modern winemaking to achieve perfect harmony.


The vines are deeply rooted in soils of marl, clay and limestone, which lend the wine its distinctive minerality and depth. Following maceration in a stainless-steel tank – one week at 28 °C and a further two weeks at 17 °C – the Gaja Sperss 2020 is initially aged for 12 months in barriques before spending a further 12 months maturing in large oak casks. This two-stage ageing process ensures complexity, elegance and perfectly integrated tannins. With a maturation period extending until 2036, this Barolo possesses exceptional ageing potential and ranks among the great classics of the Gaja estate – powerful, precise and timeless in its expressiveness.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Gaja Sperss Barolo 2020 displays a brilliant, luminous ruby-garnet colour. On the nose, dense, complex aromas of ripe plums, rose petals and truffles unfold, accompanied by delicate smoky notes and a subtle spiciness. On the palate, the wine displays impressive structure, with firm, tightly woven tannins and a solid core typical of wines from Serralunga d’Alba. It comes across as powerful, deep and yet elegant, with a perfect balance between fruit, spice and structure. The finish is long, earthy and lingering, with a mineral aftertaste and delicate, balsamic complexity.

The Gaja Sperss Barolo DOP 2020 is a majestic accompaniment to fine meat dishes, particularly beef fillet, braised lamb, venison medallions or osso buco.
