Description

The Salzl Pannoterra 2020 is one of the most powerful red wines produced by the Salzl Seewinkelhof winery and impressively reflects Burgenland’s deeply rooted wine-growing culture. The grapes grow on a diverse soil structure comprising loess-like chernozem, sandy loam with a high proportion of gravel, and black earth with a gravel content, which provides the grape varieties with ideal conditions for structure, concentration and complexity. The vinification process involves traditional maceration in steel tanks at 30 °C, a maceration period of 14 days, and malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 12 months in small oak barrels, all of which are new, giving the wine its distinctive depth and elegant oak character. The recommended serving temperature is 16–18 °C, and the wine will be at its best from 2024 to 2034 under optimal storage conditions.

The combination of vigorous ageing, meticulous winemaking and mineral-rich soils results in a red wine that stylistically represents the top tier of Seewinkelhof wines. The 2020 vintage is firm, structured and, at the same time, harmoniously balanced. The combination of varietal depth, finesse and integration of the oak barrels results in a wine that is equally suited to sophisticated menus and special moments of indulgence. Its complexity and long-term development potential make the Salzl Pannoterra an outstanding example of the Burgenland red wine tradition.

Tasting Note

In the glass, a deep, dark ruby red with a black core, violet highlights and a subtle lightening at the rim. On the nose, dark berry fruit, cocoa powder, toasty hints of raspberry, black pepper, spicy notes and ripe cherries. On the palate, it reveals a powerful body with dark fruit, ripe sour cherries, plums, hints of Mon Cheri, cranberries, roasted berries, subtle herbal spice, liquorice, eucalyptus and black olives, accompanied by delicate sweetness, juicy acidity, velvety tannins and smoky, toasty nuances. The finish is full-bodied, firm, perfectly balanced and long-lasting with a hint of earthy and salty minerality.

This Pannoterra 2020 is an ideal accompaniment to rich meat and game dishes, such as venison ragout, wild boar, braised beef or spicy lamb dishes. It also harmonises beautifully with strong cheeses, particularly mature hard cheeses or spicy semi-hard cheeses, whose aromatic depth is complemented by the wine’s body. Hearty dishes featuring mushrooms, dark sauces or Mediterranean herbs also pair superbly with its powerful style. Thanks to its structure, complexity and great ageing potential, it is particularly well-suited to festive menus, special occasions and for lovers of characterful red wines.
