Description
Description
The Hillinger Grüner Veltliner Leithaberg DAC 2022, 13% vol., 0.75 l, comes from the distinctive slopes of the Leithaberg, where limestone- and slate-dominated soils provide ideal conditions for this grape variety. The grapes come from old vines, whose deep root systems precisely reflect the region’s geological diversity. The winemaking process involves a selective hand-harvest, 16 hours of maceration, spontaneous fermentation in used French barriques and a fermentation period of five months. This is followed by approximately four months’ ageing on the full lees, a further twelve months’ ageing on the fine lees, and ageing in a 3,000-litre wooden cask. This combination of traditional craftsmanship and careful maturation lends the wine structure, depth and a clear expression of its terroir. With a ageing potential of around 10 years, the Leithaberg Veltliner is one of the region’s longest-lasting white wines.
The 2022 vintage exemplifies the perfect fusion of terroir, craftsmanship and varietal character. The influence of the Leithaberg vineyards is evident in the wine’s stylistic clarity and taut structure, making it a versatile yet sophisticated representative of the DAC. The combination of gentle winemaking, extended yeast ageing and terroir-driven soils emphasises its precision and elegance. The optimal serving temperature is 9–10°C, whilst the ideal drinking temperature is 11–12°C, at which its internal structure and subtle tension appear particularly well-balanced.
Tasting Note
In the glass, it is a golden straw-yellow colour with clear, bright edges. On the nose, ripe vineyard peach and lemon, followed by subtle, spicy aromas reminiscent of slate, black pepper and Provençal herbs. On the palate, it is perfectly balanced with lively acidity and crisp minerality, reminiscent of fresh morning dew. The finish is fresh, precise and long-lasting.
Acidity: 4.9 g/l
Residual sugar: 1 g/l
This Grüner Veltliner Leithaberg DAC pairs excellently with scampi on lemongrass, catfish fillet with porcini risotto, herb-infused dishes, white meat and classic Austrian dishes such as Krautfleckerl or Wiener Schnitzel. It is equally well-suited to vegetarian dishes, aromatic vegetable dishes and delicate starters. Thanks to its minerality and structure, it is ideal for sophisticated multi-course meals, festive occasions or simply savouring a characterful Leithaberg Veltliner on its own.
