The Hillinger Zweigelt 2024 represents a modern, fruit-driven Zweigelt from Austria and embodies the distinctive style of the Leo Hillinger winery. The aim of this bottling is to create an accessible, precise red wine that focuses on varietal character and drinking pleasure. The wine is vinified dry, deliberately emphasising the fruit and the invigorating freshness of this grape variety. With an alcohol content of 13 per cent, the 2024 vintage is balanced and light-footed without losing any of its structure, making it suitable for both early enjoyment and short-term cellaring. Its ageing potential of 2 to 4 years underlines the uncomplicated character of this Zweigelt, which is nonetheless well-structured.


Vinification involves maceration in steel tanks with regular pumping over to specifically bring out the fruit intensity and clarity. The deliberate decision not to use oak preserves the variety’s freshness and makes the wine particularly versatile. Bottled with a screw cap, this Hillinger Zweigelt embodies contemporary wine enjoyment and ease of use. A serving temperature of 10 to 12 °C is recommended, though the wine is particularly fresh and invigorating when served at around 10 °C.

Tasting Note

In the glass, it has a purplish-red core with subtle violet highlights. On the nose, it is fruity, characterised by dark cherries and blackberries. On the palate, the cherry aroma continues, supported by soft, velvety tannins and pleasant acidity. The finish is fruity and of medium length, emphasising the charming character of this Zweigelt.

The Hillinger Zweigelt 2024 pairs superbly with delicate starters such as pâtés, as well as classic beef tartare or beef carpaccio, as its freshness and fruitiness complement the delicate textures of the meat perfectly. Thanks to its fresh style, this Zweigelt from Austria is equally well suited to being enjoyed on its own at a moderate serving temperature when a fruit-forward red wine with a clear structure is called for.
