The Salzl Cuvée 3-5-8 Premium 2021 14% ABV 0.75 l is a powerful and elegant red wine cuvée from Burgenland, which ranks amongst the finest wines produced by the Salzl Seewinkelhof winery. This premium red wine from Austria blends Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create a complex composition with an international style and regional character. The vines grow on sandy soils and black earth composed of loamy silt with a high gravel content, which gives this Burgenland red wine its mineral structure and aromatic depth.

Vinification involves traditional maceration in stainless-steel tanks at around 30 °C, with a maceration period of approximately 20 days, followed by malolactic fermentation, which lends the wine additional harmony. The cuvée, made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, is then aged for a full 24 months in small oak barrels made from 100 per cent new wood, giving this barrique-aged red wine its complex structure, subtle toasted aromas and impressive depth. With an alcohol content of 14% vol., this premium Austrian red wine is powerful, dense and superbly structured. The 2021 vintage has a drinking window from around 2025 to 2035, offering considerable ageing potential.

Tasting Note

In the glass, it displays a deep, dark ruby-garnet colour with an opaque centre and a delicate violet tinge at the rim. On the nose, opulent aromas of ripe berry fruit unfold, accompanied by dark chocolate, smoky spicy notes, liquorice, black cherries and hints of figs, orange zest and redcurrant leaves. On the palate, the wine is dense and complex, with rich, sweet fruit, juicy tannins and a balanced structure featuring nuances of berry jam and roasted plums, The finish is long, chocolatey and characterised by nougat, as well as a delicately toasty finish with plenty of fruity richness.

The Salzl Cuvée 3-5-8 Premium 2021 is an excellent accompaniment to rich meat dishes, game, beef fillet, braised beef, lamb or hearty BBQ dishes. This Burgenland red wine cuvée also reveals its aromatic depth particularly harmoniously when paired with spicy hard cheeses or mature cheeses. Served at around 16 to 18 °C in a Bordeaux glass, this barrique-aged Austrian red wine showcases its complex structure, elegant power and long-lasting finish to the full.
