Isle of Raasay 7 Years Old Peated Bordeaux Red Wine Single Malt Single Cask #18/792 59.3% vol. 0.7l in a gift box
The Isle of Raasay 7 Years Old Peated Bordeaux Red Wine Single Malt Single Cask #18/792 is a unique single-cask bottling from the Isle of Raasay Distillery on the Scottish Hebridean island of the same name. This bottling forms part of the Na Sia Single Cask Series, through which the distillery presents each of the six different cask types – or recipe components – of its Isle of Raasay Single Malt individually. This 7-year-old peated single malt Scotch whisky is made from 100 per cent Scottish malted barley. The peated spirit was matured in Bordeaux Red Wine Cask #18/792, thereby directly linking the smoky base with the influence of the French red wine cask. The single cask is bottled at a robust 59.3% ABV, in its natural colour and without chill filtration.
The Bordeaux red wine casks used by Raasay arrive on the island fresh from châteaux in south-west France and have a capacity of around 220 litres. They are made from the European oak species Quercus robur and Quercus petraea and were previously used for three Bordeaux vintages. During maturation, the casks impart tannins and spicy oak notes, as well as intense fruit characteristics, to the whisky. Characteristic of this cask type are, in particular, dark fruits such as blackberries, plums and cherries, as well as dried fruits and raisins. It is precisely the combination of peated Raasay distillate, Bordeaux red wine casks and a single-cask bottling that makes Cask #18/792 a particularly distinctive interpretation of the island style. The 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a matching gift box.
Tasting Note
Colour: Dark gold to reddish amber.
Nose: Dark fruits, raisins and dried fruits blend with blackberries, plums, cherries and a smoky undertone.
Palate: Full-bodied and complex with dark berries, sultanas and red wine fruit, accompanied by spicy European oak, tannins and peat smoke.
Finish: Long-lasting, robust and warming with dark fruit, spicy oak, dry red wine notes and lingering smoke.
Due to its high alcohol content of 59.3%, the Isle of Raasay Peated Bordeaux Red Wine Single Cask #18/792 is best enjoyed neat at room temperature to begin with, followed by a few drops of still water. Culinary pairings include full-bodied hard cheeses, smoked meats, dark chocolate or desserts featuring plums and dark berries, which complement the combination of peaty smoke and Bordeaux cask. This bottling is particularly interesting for comparative tastings within the Na Sia Single Cask Series, as it allows one to specifically trace the influence of the Bordeaux red wine cask on the Raasay style.
