Description
Description
The Gran Duque D'Alba Solera Gran Reserva is a premium Brandy de Jerez from Spain, produced by Bodegas Williams & Humbert in Jerez de la Frontera. The brandy takes its name from the historic title of Gran Duque D'Alba. It is produced using selected wine distillates, which are then matured using the traditional Criaderas-y-Solera method. In this process, younger and older brandies are gradually blended across several rows of casks, creating a continuous maturation process. As a Brandy de Jerez Solera Gran Reserva, this bottling belongs to the highest ageing category within the Protected Designation of Origin and represents a particularly long-aged and complex style.
The Gran Duque D'Alba is aged in traditional American oak sherry casks, known as ‘botas’, which previously contained Oloroso sherry. It is precisely this cask ageing that shapes its characteristic style, blending mature brandy notes with the influence of dry, full-bodied sherry. This premium Spanish brandy is bottled at 40 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle. The combination of D.O. Brandy de Jerez, Solera Gran Reserva, Criaderas-y-Solera ageing and Oloroso sherry casks make Gran Duque D'Alba a classic example of the time-honoured tradition of brandy production in Jerez and an interesting choice for connoisseurs of long-aged Spanish brandies.
Tasting Note
Colour: Dark mahogany with golden highlights.
Nose: Intense and complex with notes of mature brandy, dried fruit and vanilla, accompanied by spicy oak and distinct Oloroso sherry notes.
Palate: Full-bodied, smooth and well-balanced with dried fruit, caramel and vanilla, complemented by toasted nuts, spices and matured oak.
Finish: Long-lasting, warm and harmonious with sherry, nuts, a delicate sweetness and spicy woody notes.
The Gran Duque D'Alba Solera Gran Reserva is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature and makes a classic digestif after a leisurely meal. Culinary pairings include dark chocolate, roasted almonds and nuts, mature hard cheeses, or desserts featuring caramel and dried fruit. Its Oloroso-influenced character also comes into its own with coffee or as a tranquil finale to a festive meal. It can also be used in classic brandy cocktails, although, due to its long Solera ageing, it is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat.
