Octomore EDITION: 17.1 Super Heavily Peated Islay Single Malt, Release 2026, 59.7% ABV, 0.7l in a tin box online kaufen
The Octomore Edition 17.1 Super Heavily Peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky serves as the benchmark for the Octomore 17 series and focuses on the interplay between intensely peated distillate, barley and classic bourbon cask maturation. It is produced by the Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay using 100 per cent Concerto barley from the Scottish mainland, sourced from the 2019 harvest and malted to a phenol content of 81.0 PPM. Distillation took place in 2020, after which the whisky was matured entirely in first-fill bourbon casks for a total of five years. This deliberately straightforward cask selection allows the characteristic Octomore style to be presented in its purest form, whilst also serving as a benchmark for the other releases in the series, which feature more complex maturation profiles.
The .1 Edition of Octomore is traditionally matured in bourbon or American whisky casks, with its character varying from release to release depending on the barley, year of distillation and the conditions during maturation. In the Octomore 17.1 Release 2026, the sweet character of the first-fill bourbon casks combines with intense peat smoke and maritime influences. Particularly noteworthy is the balance between 81.0 PPM, a maturation period of just five years and a robust bottling strength of 59.7%. The whisky spends its entire maturation period on Islay, embodying a concentrated style defined by the distillate, in which sweet malt, American oak, coastal freshness and peaty smoke remain clearly discernible. This Super Heavily Peated Single Malt is bottled in a 0.7-litre bottle and presented in the distinctive Octomore tin box.
Tasting Note
Colour: Pale winter gold.
Nose: Sweet malt and creamy vanilla, accompanied by toasted coconut, butterscotch, delicate citrus zest and green melon, whilst smouldering peat, beach fire smoke and a salty Atlantic note are complemented by floral barley aromas, ginger and minerality.
Palate: Viscous, full-bodied and powerful, with vanilla milkshake, Scottish cream toffee, warm vanilla cream tart, pear sweets and malt syrup, followed by dry, earthy peat smoke, smouldering oak, ash, coconut and maritime saltiness.
Finish: Long-lasting and multi-layered, with the initial sweetness gradually giving way to drier minerality, warm peat embers, maritime saltiness and gentle roasted notes.
The Octomore 17.1, at 59.7 per cent, should initially be tasted neat at around 18–20 °C to appreciate the unadulterated character of its first-fill bourbon cask maturation. A few drops of still water can then open up the high alcohol content and allow vanilla, malt, fruit and mineral notes in particular to come to the fore more strongly. Culinary pairings include smoked salmon, grilled beef, strong hard cheese or dark chocolate, which complement its blend of sweetness, smoke and saltiness. A joint tasting with Octomore 17.2 and 17.3 is particularly interesting, as Edition 17.1 serves as a reference point that clearly illustrates the influence of the differing barley origins and cask maturations within the series.
