The Alois Lageder Lagrein 2023 12 % is a dry red wine from South Tyrol, made from 100 per cent of the indigenous Lagrein grape variety. This traditional grape variety was first mentioned in South Tyrol as far back as the 14th century and is now one of the region’s most characteristic red varieties. The grapes for the 2023 vintage come from selected vineyards near Bolzano, Auer and Margreid, situated at an altitude of between approximately 210 and 280 metres above sea level. There, deep alluvial soils with calcareous components characterise the site conditions. Following the harvest, maceration takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for around 12 months, partly in stainless steel and partly in concrete tanks. This deliberately restrained ageing process allows the Lagrein’s distinctive character to take centre stage.

With an alcohol content of 12 per cent in the 0.75-litre bottle, the Alois Lageder Lagrein 2023 presents itself as a comparatively light and fresh example of this South Tyrolean grape variety, which is often vinified in a powerful style. The long-established winery aims, in particular, to bring out the natural juiciness and acidity of the South Tyrolean Lagrein. The wine is dry and sealed with a natural cork. Alois Lageder recommends a period of around two to six years as the optimal drinking window, meaning the 2023 vintage can be enjoyed now or cellared for a few more years. The combination of an indigenous South Tyrolean grape variety, selected vineyards and approximately one year’s ageing in neutral containers makes this Lagrein a versatile red wine with a distinct regional identity.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Alois Lageder Lagrein 2023 presents a deep cherry red colour with ruby-red highlights. On the nose, intense notes of ripe plums and berries unfold, accompanied by spicy and subtly animalistic hints. On the palate, this red wine is medium-bodied yet full-flavoured, with lively freshness, distinctly perceptible tannins and a characteristic, delicately tart quality. The finish is structured, spicy and pleasantly bittersweet.

The Alois Lageder Lagrein 2023 is a classic accompaniment to red meat, game and cheese. It pairs particularly well with roast beef, lamb, game ragout or a hearty South Tyrolean cheese platter. This South Tyrolean Lagrein also makes a perfect accompaniment to grilled meat and robust regional dishes. Served at a temperature of 16–18 °C, its structure, freshness and spiciness come into their own in a particularly well-balanced way.
