Lillet Rouge 17 % is a traditional French wine-based aperitif from Podensac, near Bordeaux, made from carefully selected red wines from the Gironde region. Only red grapes are used in its production; internationally, Lillet specifies Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are blended with the house’s own fruit macerates, produced in Podensac according to a traditional recipe. Cold-macerated oranges, sourced from Spain and Haiti amongst other places, play a key role in this process. The blend is complemented by a small amount of quinine. After blending, the Lillet Rouge is given further time to mature in French oak barrels, allowing the individual components to blend harmoniously.

With an alcohol content of 17% in the 0.75-litre bottle, Lillet Rouge aperitif is designed both for drinking neat and for use in long drinks and cocktails. The company’s history dates back to 1872, when Paul and Raymond Lillet founded Maison Lillet Frères. The high wine content distinguishes Lillet from classic spirit-based aperitifs and makes proper storage essential: once opened, the bottle should be kept in the fridge and ideally consumed within three to four weeks. Lillet Rouge is also vegan, gluten-free and wheat-free. Its versatility – from a chilled aperitif to a Lillet Rouge and tonic, right through to various spritz variations – makes it a French classic for bars, terraces and social occasions.

Tasting Note

In the glass, Lillet Rouge displays an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, ripe red fruits unfold with an aromatic and inviting character. On the palate, fresh orange and red fruits combine with delicate vanilla and selected spicy notes to create a harmonious blend. The finish is fruity, delicately spicy and pleasantly lingering.

Lillet Rouge is best served well chilled or over ice and can be enjoyed neat with a slice of orange. A particularly straightforward way to enjoy it is as a Lillet Rouge and tonic, made with 1 part Lillet Rouge and 2 parts tonic water, plenty of ice cubes and a fresh slice of orange. As an aperitif, it pairs well with cheese, charcuterie, savoury canapés and small French or Mediterranean-inspired starters. This French wine-based aperitif is also ideal as a base for spritz drinks, Sangria and classic cocktails.
