Nikka From the Barrel Double Matured Blended Whisky is a full-bodied Japanese blended whisky and one of Nikka Whisky’s best-known bottlings. It is produced by blending carefully selected malt and grain whiskies, with distillates from Nikka Whisky’s Miyagikyo and Yoichi distilleries playing a key role. A distinctive feature is the additional maturation phase following the blending: once the individual whiskies have been combined, the finished blend is left to rest once more, allowing its various components to blend harmoniously. This process, known as ‘Double Maturation’, contributes significantly to the bottling’s exceptionally rich and balanced structure.

With a robust 51.4% alcohol content, Nikka From the Barrel is bottled at a significantly higher strength than many classic blended whiskies. The high ABV ensures concentration and structure, whilst the compact, almost square 0.5-litre bottle has long since become a distinctive hallmark of this bottling. Nikka was founded by the Japanese whisky pioneer Masataka Taketsuru, whose experience of Scottish whisky production had a significant influence on the company’s development. The From the Barrel Double Matured combines this tradition with Nikka’s distinctive Japanese blending style and is available in this version complete with a gift box.

Tasting Note

Colour: Golden amber with coppery highlights.

Nose: Intense and complex, with ripe fruit, apricot and orange, accompanied by vanilla, caramel and subtle spicy notes.

Palate: Powerful, full-bodied and well-balanced, with ripe fruit, toffee and vanilla, complemented by spicy oak, pepper and a subtle nutty note.

Finish: Long-lasting and warming, with oaky spice, ripe fruit, vanilla and an increasingly dry, spicy aftertaste.

Nikka From the Barrel is ideal for enjoying neat at around 18–20 °C, although a few drops of still water at 51.4% can unlock additional flavours. Alternatively, it can be served over a large ice cube or as a robust Japanese Highball with Sodawasser. Culinary pairings include grilled beef, roasted nuts, mature hard cheese or dark chocolate, which complement its intense profile. The high ABV also provides a good base for a spirit-forward Old Fashioned.
