Kavalan LÁN Single Malt Whisky is an elegant Taiwanese single malt whisky, created as a tribute to the home of the Kavalan Distillery in Yilan, Taiwan. The name has a double meaning: on the one hand, ‘LÁN’ refers to Yilan; on the other, the Chinese word ‘LÁN’ means ‘orchid’, thus alluding to Taiwan’s special connection with orchid cultivation. The single malt is produced by the internationally renowned Kavalan Distillery, which has developed a distinctive style by maturing its whiskies in Taiwan’s subtropical climate. Kavalan LÁN, with an alcohol content of 43 per cent, combines floral elegance with a complex cask composition and is bottled in a 0.7-litre bottle.

The Kavalan LÁN Single Malt Whisky 43% combines different types of casks. Bourbon casks contribute fresh vanilla notes in particular, whilst port casks add nutty and fruity accents. In addition, STR wine casks provide caramel-like and fruity sweetness. STR stands for ‘Shaved, Toasted and Re-charred’ and refers to specially treated wine casks whose wood, through this process, exerts an intense influence on the maturation. The interplay of these three cask types characterises a Kavalan Whisky matured in bourbon, port and STR wine casks, which combines floral and fruity notes with creamy sweetness, nutty notes and subtle woody spice.

Tasting Note

Colour: Dark amber with warm highlights.

Nose: Complex and floral with notes of orchid, rose, jasmine, peony and orange blossom, complemented by creamy vanilla, chocolate, caramel, cantaloupe melon and fruit jellies, as well as subtle hints of nut and cinnamon.

Palate: Fresh and elegant with floral and fruity flavours that blend with creamy, chocolatey and caramel-like nuances, as well as sweet, nutty woody tones.

Finish: Long-lasting and harmonious, with nuts, cinnamon, subtle woody spice and a delicate lingering fruit sweetness.

Kavalan LÁN Single Malt Whisky is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C, allowing the floral and fruity components from the various cask maturations to unfold. It pairs well with roasted almonds and hazelnuts, mild to medium-strength cheeses, and dark or lightly salted chocolate. Desserts featuring caramel, vanilla, melon or nuts complement the flavours of the bourbon, port and STR wine casks particularly well. Thanks to its floral and comparatively elegant character, Kavalan LÁN is also well suited to single malt tastings focusing on different cask types and Asian whiskies.
