The West Cork MARITIME Single Malt Irish Whiskey RUM CASK FINISHED Limited Edition is a single malt Irish whiskey from County Cork, combining classic Irish whiskey character with an additional rum cask finish. This expression is produced by West Cork Distillers in Skibbereen in the south-west of Ireland. The independent distillery was founded in 2003 and has grown from relatively modest beginnings to become an established producer of Irish whiskies. Malted barley forms the basis of this West Cork single malt. Following its initial maturation, the whisky undergoes additional finishing in ex-rum casks, the influence of which complements the malty base with sweeter and fruitier cask notes.

The West Cork Maritime Rum Cask Finished forms part of the Maritime Collection, whose name reflects the distillery’s close connection to the Atlantic coast of West Cork. The rum cask finish lends the single malt additional notes of tropical fruit, vanilla and caramelised sweetness, without overshadowing the fundamental character of the Irish whisky. With an alcohol content of 43% and a 0.7-litre bottle, this limited edition offers a well-balanced drinking strength. The combination of Irish single malt and rum cask finishing makes this bottling particularly interesting for tastings of different cask finishes and offers a fruit-forward interpretation within the West Cork Maritime series.

Tasting Note

Colour: Warm gold with amber highlights.

Nose: Fruity and malty with vanilla, caramel and ripe tropical fruits, accompanied by subtle sweet spicy and oaky notes.

Palate: Smooth and full-bodied with malt, creamy vanilla and caramelised sweetness, complemented by tropical fruits and a subtle oakiness.

Finish: Long-lasting and harmonious with vanilla, sweet fruit, subtle rum cask notes and spicy oak.

The West Cork Maritime Rum Cask Finished Single Malt is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C; alternatively, a few drops of still water may be added. It pairs well with grilled pineapple, caramelised banana, roasted nuts or mild to medium-strength cheeses. Desserts featuring caramel, vanilla, coconut or tropical fruits also complement the influences of the rum cask finish well. For whisky tastings, this limited edition is particularly well-suited for a direct comparison with other cask variants from the West Cork Maritime Collection.
