The Laphroaig 15 Years Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky marks the return of a time-honoured age statement to the Laphroaig Distillery’s core range. The Laphroaig 15 was originally launched in 1985. After an absence of around ten years, the age statement is now back, showcasing the distillery’s distinctive style with added maturity and depth. Produced on the south coast of the Scottish island of Islay, Laphroaig has always been synonymous with a particularly distinctive character characterised by peaty smoke, maritime notes and robust spice. The 15 years of maturation on Islay give this single malt ample time to combine these typical characteristics with a rounder structure and greater complexity.

The Laphroaig 15 Years Old is matured in ex-American oak casks, whose influence complements the robust Islay style with notes of vanilla, citrus and a subtle sweetness. The characteristic Laphroaig smoke remains distinctly present, yet gains additional balance and depth through the extended cask maturation. With an alcohol content of 46% and a 0.7-litre bottle, the 15-year-old Laphroaig Single Malt is robust and well-structured. The combination of a long maturation period, American oak and the unmistakable coastal character makes this bottling an interesting addition to the core Laphroaig range and a classic, smoky Islay single malt Scotch whisky with an age statement.

Tasting Note

Colour: Warm gold with amber highlights.

Nose: Fresh citrus notes of orange peel and grapefruit, accompanied by dried hay, soft vanilla, a hint of clove and the characteristic Laphroaig smoke.

Palate: Powerful and full-bodied with peaty smoke and sea salt, followed by freshly ground black pepper, warming spices and a subtle sweetness, supported by a round, mature texture.

Finish: Long-lasting and smoky with savoury, spicy nuances, maritime saltiness and a clean, subtly sweet note.

The Laphroaig 15 Years Old is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C, although a few drops of still water can bring out additional citrus, spicy and smoky notes. Oysters, smoked salmon and other robust fish dishes complement the whisky’s pronounced maritime saltiness. Smoked meats, mature hard cheeses or dark chocolate also pair well with the intense peat smoke and the spicy cask-maturation notes. For an Islay tasting, the 15-year-old is particularly well-suited for comparison with younger Laphroaig bottlings, in order to highlight the influence of the longer maturation period.
