The Habitation Velier HAMPDEN OWH Jamaica Pure Single Rum 2016/2023 60% is a 7-year-old Jamaican pure single rum from the historic Hampden Estate Distillery in Trelawny. Molasses is used as the raw material; distillation took place in 2016 entirely using the discontinuous method in a traditional copper double-retort pot still. The bottling bears the Hampden OWH mark, which stands for Omar Warmington Hussey and represents a comparatively moderate ester concentration within the distinctive Hampden style. The rum was then matured for seven years entirely under tropical conditions in Jamaica in ex-bourbon casks. The intensive tropical ageing resulted in an exceptionally high Angel’s Share of over 42 per cent, causing the distillate to become significantly more concentrated during the maturation period.

In 2023, the rum was bottled by Habitation Velier at a robust 60 per cent cask strength. No chill filtration or colouring has been applied, thereby preserving the original character of the distillate and its cask maturation. No sweetening has taken place either. The Habitation Velier series focuses on traditional distilleries and their distillation methods, with this Hampden OWH 2016 representing the Jamaican pot-still tradition particularly authentically. The combination of OWH Mark, seven years’ tropical maturation, ex-bourbon casks and 60 per cent cask strength makes this 0.7-litre bottling, complete with a gift box, a distinctive example of Jamaican pure single rums.

Tasting Note

Colour: Pale gold.

Nose: Intense and complex with ripe dark fruits, vanilla and spicy notes, accompanied by the characteristic ester aromas of Jamaican pot-still rums.

Palate: Powerful and concentrated with ripe fruit, dry spices and pronounced vanilla, complemented by molasses, oak and the intense structure of cask strength.

Finish: Long-lasting, robust and warming, with fruit, dry spice, vanilla and lingering woody notes.

The Habitation Velier Hampden OWH 2016/2023 should initially be tasted neat at around 18 to 20 °C. Due to the high 60% ABV, a few drops of still water may be added to open up the concentrated structure and bring out finer fruit and cask notes. Dark chocolate, roasted nuts or desserts featuring banana and caramelised fruit make ideal accompaniments. This bottling is particularly well-suited to a comparative tasting of different Hampden marks, to highlight the distinctive characteristics of the OWH profile.
