The Caol Ila 12 Years Old is one of the most important representatives of the island of Islay and is part of the famous Classic Malts of Scotland. Since 1846, the distillery of the same name has been creating a style that combines maritime freshness, fine smokiness and balanced complexity. The 12-year-old malt is considered a middle-weight Caol Ila, but shows an impressive combination of crisp phenols, oily structures and a clear, characterful strength. This bottling is a well-balanced, peaty beauty that will delight both long-time Islay lovers and newcomers alike. The enclosed gift box (GB) emphasises its high-quality character.


The malt is pure and white-golden, thanks to its classic maturation in oak casks and the use of colouring to harmonise the hue. Typical of Caol Ila, the whisky combines sparkling fresh sea salt flavours with powerful peat notes, with an initial sweetness creating an elegant balance. At 43% vol., it is smooth, aromatic and yet energetic - an impressive expression of the maritime Islay style.

Tasting Note

Colour: White gold.

Nose: Delicate citrus notes, fresh maritime aromas, light gauze nuances, a pinch of tobacco and increasingly strong smoke.

Flavour: Fine, soft texture; initially mild sweetness, which is quickly replaced by intense peat smoke and subtle tropical fruits.

Finish: Langs, clean and persistently smoky.

This Islay malt harmonises perfectly with smoked meats such as salmon, mackerel or BBQ dishes as well as strong cheeses such as cheddar or blue cheese. Lemon tart, dark chocolate with sea salt or roasted nuts also complement its maritime smokiness particularly well. Its salty freshness unfolds impressively in combination with oysters or seafood appetisers. On its own or with a few drops of water, it reveals its complex layering of sweetness, smoke and maritime nuances for a long time in the glass.
