The alcohol content of a whisky changes significantly during the ageing process. The so-called ‘new make spirit’ – the fresh distillate immediately after distillation – usually has an alcohol content of around 63 to 70% ABV, depending on the distillation method and the distillery. When this is transferred to oak casks, a maturation process lasting several years begins, during which not only are aromas absorbed from the wood, but alcohol and water also evaporate through the cask – known as the ‘Angel’s Share’.

Depending on the climate, cask size and storage location , the alcohol content decreases by an average of 0.5 to 1% ABV annually . In cooler regions such as Scotland, the alcohol content decreases slowly, whilst in warmer climates such as the USA, a slight increase is also possible. At the end of this process, the whisky is either bottled directly at cask strength or diluted to the desired drinking strength – a step that significantly shapes its character.

Cask-strength whisky is bottled straight from the cask – without adding water to reduce the alcohol content. As a result, the alcohol by volume is often significantly higher than the standard drinking strength of 40–46 % and can range from 50 % to over 60 %, depending on the ageing process. These bottlings are considered particularly authentic and unadulterated, as they present the distillate in its most original form – just as it has matured in the cask.

The high alcohol content not only brings greater strength, but above all a more intense concentration of aromas. The complexity ranges from robust wood and spice notes to deep fruit and toasted aromas, which can be individually revealed through the careful addition of water.
