Production begins with a neutral spirit, which is distilled with various botanicals such as juniper, coriander, angelica root and citrus fruits. The botanicals may be steeped in the spirit prior to distillation, or the alcohol vapour is passed through the botanicals to absorb their flavours.

Genever is distilled from malted grain, much like whisky, and then flavoured with juniper and other botanicals. The alcohol content is usually between 35% and 50% by volume. The production process is similar to that of gin, but with a greater emphasis on the malt base.
