The origins of Tanqueray Gin

The history of Tanqueray begins in 1830, when the visionary Charles Tanqueray founded his own distillery in the Bloomsbury district of London. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Tanqueray experimented with exotic botanicals, developing the recipe still used today with juniper, coriander, angelica root and liquorice – an innovation that quickly attracted attention.

His gin was not only well received in England but was soon exported internationally. After Charles’s death, his son took over the business and continued to run it successfully. The brand even survived the bombing of London during the Second World War, when only a single still – ‘Old Tom’ – remained intact. This is still in use today and symbolises the heritage and enduring legacy of Tanqueray.
