Zacapa Edición Negra is an exceptional premium rum from Guatemala, inspired by the country’s natural elements and the dark power of its volcanoes. Its production begins with particularly high-quality sugar cane, which grows under ideal climatic conditions in the heart of Central America. One of the distinctive features of this rum is the use of ‘Virgin Sugar Cane Honey’, the fine essence from the first pressing of the sugar cane, which lends it unrivalled depth and complexity.

It is matured using the elaborate Solera method, in which distillates of varying ages – between six and 23 years – are blended in carefully selected oak casks. These casks, which previously contained bourbon, sherry and Pedro Ximénez wine, lend Zacapa Edición Negra its impressive aroma. What makes this rum special is the final ageing in double-charred American oak casks that previously held American whisky. This process gives it its intense, smoky character, which stands in stark contrast to the sweet, caramel-driven notes of Zacapa 23.

Every stage of production is overseen by Master Blender Lorena Vásquez, who is world-renowned for her powerful and expressive rum creations. Ageing takes place at 2,300 metres above sea level in the ‘House Above the Clouds’, which slows down the ageing process and gives the rum its exceptional complexity and elegance.

Tasting Note

Colour: Deep mahogany with coppery highlights.

Nose: Intense aromas of toasted wood, dark chocolate, leather and dried fruit with subtle smoky notes.

Palate: Powerful and spicy with hints of caramelised sugar, vanilla, oak and a touch of nutmeg and coffee. The smoky note lends it a particular depth.

Finish: Long and intense with spicy woody notes, toasted almonds and a gentle, peaty aftertaste.

Zacapa Edición Negra is a rum for true connoisseurs who prefer a deeper, smokier and less sweet flavour profile. It unfolds its full potential when enjoyed neat or on the rocks, allowing its multi-faceted structure to really come into its own. Paired with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or spicy cigars, it offers an exquisite taste experience. Alternatively, it can form a sophisticated base in premium cocktails such as a rum Old Fashioned or a rum Negroni.
