The Knappogue Castle 12 Years Old Bourbon Cask Matured is a classic single malt Irish whisky, produced exclusively from malted barley and triple-distilled in accordance with Irish tradition. Unlike a blended Irish whisky, this bottling is a pure single malt. Its full 12-year maturation in ex-bourbon casks made of American oak defines the whisky’s straightforward and balanced style. The focus is deliberately not on any additional maturation in sherry, wine or other specialised casks. Rather, the bourbon casks allow the distillate’s original character to shine through, complementing it with the typical influences of American oak.


With an alcohol content of 43 per cent, Knappogue Castle 12 Years combines its long cask maturation with an approachable profile, making it an excellent introduction to the brand’s range. Knappogue Castle is renowned for its single malt Irish whiskies and takes its name from the historic Knappogue Castle in County Clare, Ireland. The brand traces its origins to Mark Edwin Andrews, who began acquiring selected stocks of Irish whiskies in the 1960s and bottled them under the name Knappogue Castle Whiskey. The 12 Years Bourbon Cask Matured continues this focus on matured Irish single malts and is available in a 0.7-litre bottle, complete with a gift box.

Tasting Note

Colour: Pale gold with warm amber highlights.

Nose: Vanilla and fresh fruit, accompanied by floral nuances, malt and subtle hints of American oak.

Palate: Smooth and well-balanced, with vanilla, ripe fruit and a delicate malty sweetness, complemented by subtle floral notes and mild oak.

Finish: Pleasantly lingering and harmonious, with vanilla, gentle fruit and a subtle oak finish.

Knappogue Castle 12 Years Old is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18–20 °C, but can also be served over a large ice cube. It pairs well with mild hard cheeses, roasted almonds, apple tart or desserts featuring vanilla and pear. Thanks to its balanced bourbon cask character, it is also well-suited to premium whisky long drinks and classic cocktails.
