The Port Charlotte PMC:01 2013 is a heavily peated Islay single malt whisky produced at the renowned Bruichladdich Distillery. The name Port Charlotte refers to the distillery’s intensely smoky whisky range, with each bottling identified by a specific alphanumeric code. The PMC:01 edition is part of the exclusive Cask Exploration Series, which focuses on small batches with distinctive cask maturations. This bottling offers a unique combination of robust peat smoke and fruity wine cask notes, making it a distinctive treat for lovers of smoky whiskies.

This whisky was distilled in 2013 and initially matured for four years in first-fill bourbon casks, during which time it developed sweet vanilla and oak notes. It was then matured for a further five years in Pomerol wine casks – one of the most renowned appellations on the right bank of Bordeaux. This exceptional choice of casks lends the whisky a fascinating depth, fruity accents and an elegant structure.

With a phenol content of 40 ppm, this limited-edition whisky embodies the classic, heavily peated Islay profile, whilst remaining wonderfully balanced thanks to the influence of the French wine casks. Its complex aroma profile reflects the innovative spirit of the Bruichladdich Distillery, which combines modern cask-maturation techniques with traditional Islay whisky-making.

Tasting Note

Colour: Deep gold with reddish highlights.

Nose: Warm peaty smoke meets ripe red fruits such as raspberries and strawberries, accompanied by spicy oak, dark chocolate and a hint of sea salt.

Palate: Full-bodied and complex with dominant smoky notes, sweet malt sugar, blackberries and plums, complemented by delicate spicy notes and subtle herbal undertones.

Finish: Long-lasting with elegant fruitiness, a sea breeze and the intense, smoky character typical of Port Charlotte.

Port Charlotte PMC:01 2013 reveals its full depth when enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to bring out the complex cask notes even more. Its robust structure pairs superbly with mature blue cheese, smoked meats or dark chocolate.
