In 1875, Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, a young adventurer from Genoa, Italy, left his family behind to travel to the exotic country of Nicaragua. The perfect location for the distillery was found at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano, Nicaragua’s highest and most active volcano. The fertility of the surrounding land, the mineral-rich water and the hot volcanic climate proved to be crucial to the rum’s unique and smooth flavour.
