The inspiration for this whisky comes from the Battle of Kinsale. It was the decisive battle in England’s successful campaign to bring Gaelic Ireland back under its control.

Hugh Roe O’Donnell, also known as Red Hugh, was a leading figure in Gaelic Ireland and reigned as King of Tyrconnell in Ulster from 1461 to 1505. He was the head of the O’Donnell dynasty at the time and, having travelled to Spain following the defeat at the Siege of Kinsale to seek support from King Philip III, he met a mysterious end. He was buried near the Spanish wine region of Rioja.

Red Earl Blended Irish Whiskey is a blend of Irish whiskey from ex-bourbon casks and triple-distilled malt from ex-sherry casks, which have been matured for 45 months and then blended together for at least 4 months in ex-Rioja casks. The Rioja casks were chosen for their spicy fruit notes and as a mark of respect for Red Hugh’s final resting place near the Rioja region in Spain.

Tasting Note

Colour: Gold with subtle rosé hues.

Nose: Lively fruit aromas, subtle notes of cherries, strawberries, rose petals and citrus fruits, with a hint of marzipan, almond and oak.

Palate: A symphony of toffee, vanilla and toasted almonds, with typical spicy Rioja aromas such as cinnamon and cloves.

Finish: Medium-bodied with a long, warm finish.
