Hugh “The Great Earl” O’Neill, a celebrated general, refused to be discouraged despite all the adversity. After rescuing Red Hugh O’Donnell following his escape from Dublin Castle, they fought side by side with Juan del Aguila, the “Spanish Earl”, at the Battle of Kinsale in 1601.

When he left Ireland in 1607 as part of the Counts’ flight, he died nine years later in Rome, where he remains buried to this day and is immortalised in a fresco in Vatican City.

Great Earl Single Grain Irish Whiskey is a blend of rechar-barrelled grain Irish whiskey and virgin oak grain, which were matured for 45 months and then blended to spend a further minimum of 3 months in ex-Sangiovese casks. The Sangiovese casks used are sourced exclusively from the Lazio region of Italy; a nod to the Great Earl’s final resting place in the Vatican in Rome.

Tasting Note

Colour: Gold with a hint of ruby red.

Nose: Sweet, woody, buttery, sweets, vanilla, marzipan.

Palate: Sweet ripe blackberries, honey, a hint of spiciness, elderberry, white pepper, light tannins.

Finish: Long-lasting with a creamy mouthfeel.
