Description
Hampden Estate Rum 8-Year-Old Pure Single Jamaican Rum 46% vol. 0.7 l
Hampden Estate 8 Years Old Pure Single Jamaican Rum comes from the historic Hampden Estate Distillery in Trelawny, Jamaica, whose history dates back to the 18th century. This characterful Jamaican rum is produced from molasses exclusively in traditional copper pot stills. Hampden is particularly renowned for its meticulous natural fermentation process and its ester-rich distillates, which are produced without the use of industrial yeast cultures to standardise the flavour profile. The designation ‘Pure Single Rum’ indicates that the rum comes entirely from a single distillery and is produced using the pot-still method. For this bottling, distillates with varying ester levels are blended together to recreate the distinctive, intensely Jamaican Hampden style.
The Hampden Estate 8 Years Old is matured for eight years in oak casks in Jamaica’s tropical climate, where the high temperatures result in a particularly intense cask maturation process. Despite this lengthy tropical ageing, the distillate clearly retains the powerful character typical of Hampden. The 8-year-old Pure Single Jamaican Rum is bottled at 46% alcohol by volume. Particularly noteworthy is the authentic nature of this bottling: Hampden uses no added sugar or artificial flavourings, ensuring that fermentation, pot-still distillation and tropical cask maturation take centre stage. The combination of eight years’ tropical ageing, traditional pot-still distillation and the ester-rich Jamaican rum style makes this 0.7-litre bottling a quintessential example of the Hampden Estate Distillery.
Tasting Note
Colour: Golden amber with warm highlights.
Nose: Intense and fruity, with ripe banana, pineapple and tropical fruits, accompanied by spicy, slightly fermented and typically ester-rich Hampden notes.
Palate: Full-bodied, complex and robust, with tropical fruits, banana and pineapple, as well as vanilla, spices and a distinctive, slightly ‘funky’ ester character.
Finish: Long-lasting, dry and expressive, with tropical fruit, spices, oak and lingering ester notes.
The Hampden Estate 8 Years Old is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18–20 °C, whilst a nosing glass brings out the intense ester and fruit characteristics to their best advantage. A few drops of still water can further open up the rum and release additional fruit and spice notes. It pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, grilled pineapple or strong, matured cheese. It is also well-suited to high-quality rum cocktails, particularly a Mai Tai or a Rum Old Fashioned, when an intense Jamaican rum character is specifically desired.
