The Octomore EDITION: 15.1 Super Heavily Peated Islay Single Malt Limited Release 2024 59.1% comes from the Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay and, as the 15.1, serves as the stylistic benchmark within the Octomore range. The whisky was distilled in 2018 from the 2017 harvest and produced exclusively from 100 per cent Concerto barley from the Scottish mainland. The exceptionally heavily peated malt boasts an impressive phenol content of 108.2 PPM, making it a prime example of the uncompromisingly smoky character of the Octomore range. Following distillation, the single malt was matured for five years in a combination of first-fill bourbon casks and re-charred ex-bourbon casks, resulting in intense peaty smoke blending with sweet malt, vanilla and richly toasted oak.

With an alcohol content of 59.1%, the Octomore 15.1 Limited Release 2024 is particularly powerful and concentrated, yet remains complex and well-balanced. The combination of different bourbon casks was deliberately chosen to extract as much character as possible from the American oak whilst simultaneously highlighting the distillery’s intensely peated character. Fruity notes of mango, banana and apricot blend with vanilla cream, toffee and sweet, charred oak, whilst dry, earthy peat smoke and maritime notes define the typical Islay single malt character. The 0.7-litre bottle is aimed particularly at lovers of extremely peated whiskies and also serves as a starting point for comparison with the other editions in the Octomore 15 series.

Tasting Note

Colour: Pale gold, like winter sunshine.

Nose: Intense, with caramel, lively citrus notes and dry, earthy peat smoke, followed by aniseed, vanilla and vanilla cream, as well as tropical fruits, geranium and a hint of ginger.

Palate: Powerful and warming with sweet, dry malt and dense peaty smoke, complemented by mango, banana and apricot jam, as well as vanilla cream, toffee and subtle maritime notes.

Finish: Long-lasting and intense, with peaty smoke, vanilla, sweet charred oak and a fresh maritime note.

The Octomore 15.1 is best enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C, although a few drops of still water can open up the high alcohol content and bring out additional fruity, smoky and maritime notes. Dark chocolate, smoked meat, strong hard cheese or roasted nuts pair particularly well with the intense peaty smoke and charred oak. Desserts featuring vanilla, caramel or apricot also provide an interesting contrast to the pronounced smokiness. This bottling is particularly exciting for comparative tastings within the Octomore 15 series, as the 15.1 serves as a benchmark for barley origin, peat intensity and bourbon cask maturation.
