The Kilchoman MACHIR BAY Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is one of the signature expressions from the independent Kilchoman Distillery on the Scottish island of Islay. The whisky is named after Machir Bay, a striking bay on the island’s west coast, not far from the distillery. Kilchoman was founded in 2005 and combines traditional whisky-making with a distinctly peaty, smoky Islay style. For Machir Bay, the distillery relies on a precisely balanced cask blend: The single malt is a vatting comprising 90 per cent bourbon casks and 10 per cent Oloroso sherry casks. The high proportion of bourbon casks imparts notes of vanilla and sweetness to the whisky, whilst the Oloroso sherry casks add further depth and fruity accents to the blend.


The Kilchoman Machir Bay is bottled at a robust 46% in a 0.7-litre bottle. The whisky is non-chill-filtered and presented without added colouring, thereby preserving its original character. In particular, the combination of 90 per cent bourbon casks and 10 per cent Oloroso sherry casks ensures a balanced blend of intense peaty smoke, tropical fruit and creamy sweetness. Vanilla and oak complement the profile and lend the smoky distillate additional structure. As an Islay single malt Scotch whisky with no age statement, Machir Bay is one of Kilchoman’s flagship bottlings and is particularly suited to lovers of smoky and peaty Scotch whisky who appreciate a distinct bourbon cask influence combined with a measured proportion of Oloroso sherry.

Tasting Note

Colour: Pale gold.

Nose: Intense and inviting, with tropical fruits and a creamy sweetness, accompanied by rich peaty smoke and delicate vanilla.

Palate: Balanced and full-bodied with sweet fruit, creamy vanilla and distinct peaty smoke, complemented by spicy oak and subtle sherry notes.

Finish: Long-lasting and smoky with subtle sweetness, vanilla, oaky spice and a dry, lingering peat note.

The Kilchoman Machir Bay is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature, although a few drops of still water can open up the robust 46% ABV and bring out additional fruit and vanilla notes. Culinary pairings: this Islay single malt harmonises very well with smoked salmon, grilled meat, smoked ham or strong hard cheese. Dark chocolate and roasted nuts also provide a fitting contrast to the peaty smoke and creamy bourbon cask sweetness. Machir Bay is an excellent choice for whisky tastings as a characteristic example of a smoky Islay single malt whisky.
