The Fabelhaft Douro Tinto 2022, with an alcohol content of 12.5% vol. and available in a 0.75-litre bottle, is a characterful red wine blend from the Douro Valley that bears Dirk Niepoort’s distinctive signature. The harvest begins as early as the start of September, as only grapes with freshness, acidity and precise fruit character are sought for this wine – overripe grapes are deliberately avoided to preserve the wine’s lively style. Following careful selection in the cellar, the grapes are destemmed, crushed and fermented under temperature control. The wine is then aged for 12 months, with 15 per cent maturing in second-fill French barriques, whilst the remainder retains its freshness in stainless steel tanks.


The cuvée is based on typical Douro grape varieties such as Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and other indigenous varieties. The combination of mineral-rich soils and the austere terroir of the Douro Valley results in a wine that combines elegance, structure and freshness. The 2022 vintage is particularly clear and lively, with medium body, fine tannins and an invigorating acidity. The label also contributes to its uniqueness: the illustrations are based on Wilhelm Busch’s story of the raven Hans Huckebein, which gives the wine a distinctive, culturally rich appearance. A versatile, modern Douro wine that impresses with its clarity, balance and a long-lasting flavour profile.

Tasting Note

In the glass, a vibrant ruby red with purple highlights. On the nose, fresh wild berries, juicy blackberries, a hint of plums, as well as sweet spices and tangy, aromatic tea leaves. On the palate, it is elegant, youthful and fresh, with good body, underpinned by a mineral profile, fine fruit acidity and soft tannins. The finish is balanced, aromatic and long-lasting.

The Fabelhaft Douro Tinto 2022 is an excellent choice with pasta served with spicy vegetable or meat sauces, pizza, aromatic stews, grilled beef or pork, and Mediterranean oven-baked dishes. This cuvée also pairs excellently with mild to medium-bodied hard cheeses. Served at 16–18 °C, the fresh, mineral and long-lasting structure of this Portuguese red wine comes across as particularly harmonious.
