Niepoort’s Fabelhaft Douro Tinto 2022 is a dry Portuguese red wine from the Douro DOC, combining the characteristic style of this traditional wine-growing region with remarkable approachability. The blend features classic indigenous grape varieties of the Douro, including Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Amarela. The vines grow on the schist soils typical of the Douro, which form an important part of the terroir. After being harvested by hand, the grapes are destemmed and fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless-steel tanks. During the subsequent ageing process, the use of oak is deliberately restrained: part of the wine is aged in used French barriques, whilst the remainder remains in stainless steel tanks. This allows the Niepoort Fabelhaft Tinto to retain its youthful and fresh character.

Dirk van der Niepoort conceived the Fabelhaft Tinto as an uncomplicated, versatile Douro red wine that is not only reserved for special occasions but is equally suited as a high-quality everyday wine. The 2022 vintage represents a balanced blend of terroir, structure and drinking pleasure. The label is also highly recognisable and features motifs from Wilhelm Busch’s picture stories. Presented in a generous 1.5-litre magnum bottle, the Fabelhaft Douro Tinto 2022, with an alcohol content of 12.5 per cent, is particularly well suited for sharing over meals, at family gatherings or on convivial evenings. The magnum size further emphasises the special character of this Portuguese red wine from Niepoort.

Tasting Note

In the glass, the Fabelhaft Tinto 2022 displays a vibrant ruby red colour with purplish highlights and medium colour intensity. On the nose, fresh red and dark berries unfold, accompanied by floral notes, subtle spice and the balsamic accents characteristic of the Douro. On the palate, the wine is fresh, elegant and well-balanced, with lively acidity, soft tannins and a distinct mineral character. The finish is harmonious, fresh and pleasantly lingering.

The Niepoort Fabelhaft Tinto 2022 is a versatile dining companion and pairs particularly well with grilled meat, lamb, beef and poultry. It is equally well suited to pasta with rich sauces, tapas, mushroom dishes, Mediterranean cuisine and medium-aged hard cheeses. Thanks to its freshness and balanced structure, it also pairs superbly with Portuguese classics such as bacalhau. The ideal serving temperature is around 16–18 °C.
