The Hillinger HILL 1 2020 14% vol. 1.5 l is the first major flagship wine from the Leo Hillinger winery and, since its launch, has set a style-defining Benchmark in Burgenland viticulture. This cuvée, made from Merlot, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt, comes from selected vineyards with deep, mineral-rich soils that provide optimal conditions for powerful, long-lived red wines. The vinification process involves meticulous handling by hand, followed by extensive ageing: 24 months in new French oak, then 3–5 years in new and used barriques, before the wine is transferred to magnum bottles for further maturation. This combination of long barrel ageing and large bottle volume contributes significantly to its density, structure and impressive depth of development. The dry ageing, precise blending and high ageing potential of 10 years and beyond underline its status as the estate’s flagship wine.


The 2020 vintage impressively demonstrates the interplay between grape variety diversity, terroir and ambitious winemaking. The blend of 50 per cent Merlot, 25 per cent Blaufränkisch and 25 per cent Zweigelt lends it balance, power and aromatic complexity, whilst the extended contact with French oak shapes its structure and elegance. HILL 1 is a wine of international calibre that plays a special role both in a gastronomic setting and during moments of private enjoyment. Bottled in a 1.5-litre Magnum, it offers enhanced ageing potential and a particularly harmonious development.

Tasting Note

In the glass, it is garnet red with a brick-coloured rim. On the nose, dark fruits – blackcurrants, cherries and blueberries – accompanied by delicate hints of balsamic vinegar and black tea, with an earthy character. On the palate, it is dry, structured and full-bodied, underpinned by supportive acidity and firm tannins. Tea and balsamic aromas complement the fruity blackcurrant notes. The finish is precise, balanced and long-lasting.
