The Hillinger HILL 1 2020 is the first iconic top wine from the Leo Hillinger winery and marks the stylistic origins of the estate’s premium cuvées. With the name HILL1, this cuvée stands for uncompromising quality, a distinct style and a consistent focus on structure, depth and ageing potential. The cuvée, comprising 50 per cent Merlot, 25 per cent Blaufränkisch and 25 per cent Zweigelt, combines international elegance with Austrian heritage and harmoniously brings together the strengths of the individual grape varieties. The wine is aged dry, underlining its claim to be a powerful, long-lived red wine from Austria that impresses with both precision and expression.


The Hillinger HILL 1 2020 was aged for over 24 months in new French barriques and spent a total of 3 to 5 years in barriques, some new and some used. This extended barrel ageing lends the wine depth, complexity and a clearly defined structure, without compromising its balance. With an alcohol content of 13.5 per cent, the wine is dense and concentrated, yet always controlled and well-balanced. Its ageing potential of 10 years and beyond underlines this wine’s status as a classic from the Hillinger estate to be taken seriously. Bottled with natural corks, it is best served at a temperature of 18 to 20 °C, although the wine is at its most harmonious when served at around 18 °C.

Tasting Note

In the glass, it is garnet red with a brick-coloured rim. On the nose, dark fruits – blackcurrants, cherries and blueberries – accompanied by subtle notes of balsamic vinegar and black tea with an earthy character. On the palate, it is dry with supportive acidity, full-bodied tannins, earthy accents and hints of tea, balsamic vinegar and redcurrant. The finish is long-lasting, well-rounded and perfectly balanced.

The Hillinger HILL 1 2020 is an ideal accompaniment to beef or lamb steaks, particularly those with robust roasted aromas and a juicy centre. Furthermore, this Hillinger cuvée is perfect for quiet moments of indulgence and is a classic pairing with a cigar, where its earthy and balsamic nuances really come into their own.
