The Marchesi Antinori Castello della Sala Pinot Nero 2023 is an expressive, high-quality Italian red wine that impressively demonstrates the potential that Pinot Nero can achieve in central Italy. Produced by the long-established Marchesi Antinori estate at the historic Castello della Sala, this wine comes from Umbria, near the border with Tuscany and around 18 kilometres from Orvieto. The medieval Castello is surrounded by extensive estates, whose vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 220 to 470 metres.


Although Castello della Sala is traditionally known for its great white wines, Pinot Noir finds exceptional growing conditions here. The vines grow on limestone and clay-rich soils, interspersed with shell fossils and sandy sediments from the Pliocene epoch. The plots situated at altitudes of over 400 metres in particular benefit from marked day-night temperature variations, which promote freshness, elegance and precision. To protect the delicate grapes from the intense summer sun, the shoots are deliberately allowed to grow long and are bent over the vines so that the foliage provides natural shade. The wine has been vinified exclusively from Pinot Nero since 1990 and is regarded as the red counterpart to the legendary Cervaro della Sala.


With an alcohol content of 13.5% vol., the 2023 vintage is well-balanced, finely structured and characterised by its terroir. Bottled in a 0.75-litre bottle, this Pinot Nero epitomises elegance, provenance and precise style.

Tasting Note

In the glass, it displays a clear ruby red colour. On the nose, there are delicate aromas of red berries, cherries and subtle floral notes, accompanied by a hint of spice. On the palate, it is elegant and well-balanced, with juicy fruit, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. The finish is harmonious, precise and long-lasting.

The Marchesi Antinori Castello della Sala Pinot Nero 2023 is an excellent choice with veal, poultry, mushroom dishes, pasta with delicate sauces or mild hard cheeses. This dry Pinot Nero from Umbria also demonstrates its finesse when paired with elegant Mediterranean dishes. Best served at 14–16 °C, it reveals its balance, freshness and the authentic character of its exceptional terroir.
