Smokehead RUM REBEL Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a limited-edition release from Islay that combines the uncompromisingly smoky character of the Smokehead brand with an unusual rum cask finish. Smokehead forms part of the portfolio of the Scottish family-run company Ian Macleod Distillers, whilst the exact distillery behind this Islay-distilled single malt is not officially named. Following its initial maturation, the whisky is finished in ex-rum casks, which complements the pronounced peat and smoky notes with sweeter and exotic, fruity cask accents. It is precisely this contrast between the powerful Islay peat smoke and the sweetness of the rum casks that forms the defining characteristic of the Smokehead Rum Rebel.

The Smokehead Rum Rebel Limited Edition is bottled at a robust 46% ABV in a 0.7-litre bottle. Smokehead eschews chill filtration and the addition of colouring, ensuring that the whisky’s original character remains as unadulterated as possible. The rum cask finish brings caramelised tropical fruits and sweet notes to the typically maritime Islay profile, blending with smoke, spices and savoury nuances. This sets the Smokehead Rum Rebel Islay Whisky apart from the brand’s classically matured expressions, offering an expressive combination of peated single malt Scotch whisky, a rum cask finish and natural colour.

Tasting Note

Colour: Rich gold with warm amber hues.

Nose: Intense peaty smoke meets toasted marshmallows and candied fruit, accompanied by a slightly savoury note of bacon and sweet, cask-driven undertones.

Palate: Powerful and multi-layered with dense smoke, spicy notes and caramelised tropical fruits such as banana, complemented by sweet rum cask aromas and maritime accents.

Finish: Medium-long to long-lasting and multi-faceted, with peaty smoke, spices, tropical fruit sweetness and maritime notes.

Smokehead Rum Rebel is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C, although a few drops of still water can further bring out the robust smoky and rum cask character. It pairs well with BBQ dishes, smoked meat, strong hard cheese or grilled pineapple, the caramelised fruit of which harmonises well with the rum cask finish. Dark chocolate or desserts featuring banana and caramel also provide a fitting contrast to the intense peaty smoke. For whisky tastings, Rum Rebel is particularly well-suited for comparing classic Islay single malts with cask-finished, peated whiskies.
