The Isle of Raasay Hungarian Oak Single Malt Limited Release is a limited-edition single malt Scotch whisky, bottled at 50 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle, and forms part of the Isle of Raasay Distillery’s innovative Oak Species Maturation Series. With this series, the distillery is exploring the influence of different oak species on the character of a whisky. This third edition focuses on Quercus petraea, a high-quality Hungarian oak from the Zemplén Mountains in north-eastern Hungary, which has been prized for centuries for ageing first-class wines. Unlike the previous releases in the series, this whisky was matured entirely in ex-Oloroso sherry barriques made from Hungarian oak, allowing the spicy woody aromas to blend elegantly with the deep dried-fruit notes of the Oloroso sherry. For this bottling, both peated and unpeated Raasay spirits are matured separately and then blended, giving the whisky its complex, slightly peaty character (13–15 ppm). Naturally, it is non-chill-filtered and bottled without colouring. Only 8,000 bottles are available worldwide.

This limited special edition combines maritime island notes with the elegant spice of Hungarian oak and the richness of Oloroso sherry maturation. Tasting Note

Colour: Gold with amber highlights.

Nose: Orange peel, roasted hazelnuts, geraniums, cinnamon, ginger and sponge cake.

Palate: Ginger, coffee, Oloroso sherry, dark chocolate and delicate spices.

Finish: Long-lasting with sweet orange, ginger, a hint of smoke and a note of smoked bacon.

The Isle of Raasay Hungarian Oak Single Malt Limited Release is best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of still water. It pairs superbly with smoked duck breast, dry-aged beef steak, rack of lamb, wild boar ragout or mushroom risotto. It also pairs excellently with Comté, mature Cheddar, Manchego or Parmesan. As a dessert accompaniment, we recommend pairing it with dark chocolate (70 per cent or more), chocolate fondant, hazelnut tart, figs, dates or orange-based desserts, which beautifully highlight the spicy sherry and oak notes.
