Description
The Gérard Bertrand CORBIÈRES BOUTENAC Domaine de Villemajou Rouge 2023 15 % is a full-bodied red wine from Corbières-Boutenac in the Languedoc and is one of the finest wines produced by the historic Domaine de Villemajou. The estate was acquired by Georges Bertrand in 1970 and is closely linked to the family’s history, as it was here that Georges and his son Gérard Bertrand shared their passion for wine for more than 15 years. A distinctive feature of the vineyard is the very old Carignan vines, which form an important foundation for the wine’s unique character. The cuvée blends Carignan, Grenache Noir and Syrah. Corbières-Boutenac holds a special position within the region as a hierarchically distinguished appellation of the Corbières, recognised by the INAO. The Domaine de Villemajou Rouge is also listed on Vivino amongst the top 2 per cent of wines worldwide.
The grapes are harvested by hand and selected twice – first in the vineyard and then again in the cellar. The vinification process is tailored to each grape variety: Carignan and Syrah are processed as whole bunches using carbonic maceration for 10 to 18 days, whilst Grenache Noir, after destemming, undergoes traditional maceration for 15 to 20 days. The wine is then aged for 12 months in barriques in the Gasparet cellar. This meticulous production process gives the Domaine de Villemajou Corbières-Boutenac 2023 a complex, powerful structure and, at the same time, interesting ageing potential. With an alcohol content of 15% in the 0.75-litre bottle, it is an expressive southern French red wine for lovers of concentrated, matured cuvées.
Tasting Note
In the glass, the Gérard Bertrand Domaine de Villemajou Rouge 2023 displays a deep, rich and opulent red colour. On the nose, a complex bouquet unfolds, featuring preserved fruit, mild spices and subtle hints of leather and coffee. On the palate, the cuvée is round, smooth and generous, with the ripe fruit supported by fine-grained tannins, creating a harmonious balance. The finish is powerful, well-balanced and long-lasting.
The Domaine de Villemajou Corbières-Boutenac 2023 should be decanted before serving and enjoyed at around 17 °C. This full-bodied red wine pairs particularly well with grilled red meat, such as beef steak or lamb, as well as with hearty Mediterranean dishes. This structured cuvée also makes an excellent accompaniment to braised meat and mature cheeses. Thanks to its good ageing potential, the wine is also well suited to cellaring and special occasions.
