The Suntory The Yamazaki REFILL SPANISH OAK Single Malt Japanese Whisky, 48% ABV, showcases a unique aspect of the Yamazaki Distillery’s more than a century of experience with Spanish oak. Ever since 1923, when founder Shinjiro Torii selected Spanish oak casks for the maturation of the first Japanese single malt, this type of cask wood has been an integral part of Yamazaki’s whisky tradition. For this bottling, refill Spanish oak casks – which have previously held whisky – are specifically selected. As a result of this re-use, the influence of the wood is more subtle and restrained than with a first-fill cask. This allows the elegant Yamazaki house style to come to the fore, whilst the characteristic qualities of Spanish oak continue to play an important role in the maturation process.


The Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak also embodies the Japanese principle of ‘monozukuri’ – the consistent development and refinement of craftsmanship. The reuse of Spanish oak casks also embodies the concept of wabi-sabi, in which change and maturation over time are understood as part of beauty. For Yamazaki’s blenders, refill casks are therefore not merely a means of reuse, but a deliberately employed tool to bring out additional nuances, balance and depth within a single malt. At 48% ABV, this bottling boasts an expressive strength and is presented in a 0.7-litre bottle complete with a gift box. Nose: Stewed apricot compote with cloves and nutmeg.

Palate: Fresh cherries with dried figs, toasted peach and subtle hints of cocoa.

The Yamazaki Refill Spanish Oak is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at room temperature in a nosing glass, allowing its multi-layered cask character to unfold fully. A few drops of still water can bring out additional fruity and spicy facets. In terms of food pairings, duck breast, mature hard cheese or roasted nuts complement its structured style very well.
