The Bunnahabhain 13 Years Old BÀGH GARBH Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 50% combines the distinctive coastal character of the Bunnahabhain Distillery with an expressive Amontillado sherry cask maturation. The name Bàgh Garbh translates from Scottish Gaelic as ‘rugged bay’ and refers to Islay’s wild landscape, shaped by the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike many of the island’s whiskies, this 13-year-old Islay single malt is presented in the unpeated style typical of Bunnahabhain. After more than a decade of maturation in the distillery’s coastal warehouses, the whisky is finished in selected Amontillado sherry casks, which lend it additional structure, nutty depth and spicy fruitiness. This bottling is part of the Uncharted Coast Collection, a range created exclusively for the global travel retail market.

At a robust 50% ABV, the Bunnahabhain Bàgh Garbh 13 Years Old retains its distinctive structure, blending the influence of sherry casks with the distillery’s maritime character. Hazelnut, fig and orange marmalade meet honeyed malt and sea air, whilst sultanas, toffee, dark chocolate and spices add further depth. Bunnahabhain bottles this edition without chill filtration and without colouring, thereby preserving the whisky’s natural character. The 1-litre bottle is particularly aimed at lovers of unpeated Islay whisky with an Amontillado finish who are looking for a mature single malt with a nutty, fruity sherry profile and distinct coastal character.

Tasting Note

Colour: Natural gold to amber.

Nose: Warm and complex with hazelnuts, figs and orange marmalade, accompanied by oak, sea air, honeyed malt, floral notes and subtle spice.

Palate: Full-bodied with sultanas, toffee and spicy orange, complemented by dark chocolate, cloves, berries, vanilla and a subtle hint of tobacco.

Finish: Lingering, with roasted walnuts, dried fruit and cinnamon.

The Bunnahabhain BÀGH GARBH 13 Years Old is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C, although a few drops of still water can open up the robust 50% ABV and allow the sherry and coastal notes to come through more strongly. It pairs well with mature hard cheeses, air-dried ham, roasted walnuts or duck with a fruity sauce. For desserts, dark chocolate, fig pastries, orange cake or desserts with dried fruit harmonise particularly well with the Amontillado influence. The whisky can also be enjoyed over a large ice cube if you wish to soften its robust character slightly.
