The Kingsbarns BALCOMIE Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 46% combines the light, fruit-forward style of the young Kingsbarns Distillery with a particularly pronounced sherry cask influence. Produced in Fife, this Lowland single malt is made exclusively from locally grown barley, allowing the distillery to deliberately highlight its close connection to its Scottish heritage. For the Balcomie, Kingsbarns relies entirely on ex-Oloroso sherry casks made of American oak, which were previously filled with sherry in Jerez. This choice of casks was made specifically to combine the natural fruitiness of the distillate with soft oaky spice, dark sweetness and notes of ripe dried fruit. The result is an accessible yet multi-layered single malt that adds a significantly richer dimension to the elegant Kingsbarns house style.

At 46% ABV, the Kingsbarns Balcomie Sherry Cask Matured Whisky has sufficient structure to clearly bring out the sweet and spicy cask notes without losing its fresh Lowland character. Particularly distinctive is the interplay of dark syrupy sweetness, sultanas, fruit cake and summery berries with pineapple, orange peel and a subtle warmth of spice. The whisky is bottled without chill filtration and in its natural colour, ensuring that the influence of the Oloroso casks remains as unadulterated as possible. The 0.7-litre bottle is therefore particularly suited to connoisseurs of Lowland single malts matured in Oloroso sherry casks who appreciate a balanced blend of fruit, sweetness and elegant oak spice.

Tasting Note

Colour: Natural gold to amber.

Nose: Syrup, sultanas and fruit cake with a cinnamon glaze, accompanied by dark chocolate and summer berries.

Palate: Sweet pineapple with orange zest and subtle baking spices.

Finish: Fruity and well-balanced with dried apricot and a hint of toasted hazelnut.

Kingsbarns BALCOMIE is particularly well suited to being enjoyed neat at around 18 to 20 °C, although a few drops of still water can bring out additional fruity and sherry notes. When paired with food, mature Cheddar, roasted almonds or mildly smoked cheeses complement the sweet and spicy cask profile very well. For desserts, dark chocolate with raspberries and hazelnuts, blackberry and apple crumble or fruit cake pair particularly well. The whisky can also be enjoyed over a large ice cube if you wish to bring out the sherry character in a slightly milder way.
