In 1740, the Boehm family came to America to live the colonial dream; 48 years later, they moved to Kentucky and changed their name to ‘Beam’. Towards the end of the 18th century, German, Scottish and Irish settlers, who had brought their recipes from home, were already producing rye whisky in western Pennsylvania. However, when the US government offered incentives to settle in the West, many families moved to Kentucky. One of these farmers was Jacob Beam, who used his father’s whisky recipe to distil maize into a new, sweeter type of whisky, leading to the birth of bourbon.

Jim Beam Rye Pre-Prohibition Kentucky Straight Rye Whisky is one of Jim Beam’s new ranges and a popular alternative to the classic bourbon varieties. It is modelled on how American farmers distilled whisky before the Prohibition era. Back then, as now, rye whiskies consist mainly of a mash containing 51 per cent rye, whilst bourbon whisky is made primarily from maize. According to the manufacturer, the Jim Beam Rye Whisky is cask-aged for at least four years.

Tasting Note

Colour: Rich gold with amber highlights.

Nose: Notes of vanilla and oak, with a strong rye character.

Palate: Full-bodied, spicy, slightly sweet, with notes of grain, wood and fruit, and a hint of smoke.

Finish: Long-lasting, woody.

This rye is best enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or to add depth and body to your cocktails.
