The history of Japanese whisky began in the early 20th century and is closely linked to two visionary figures: Masataka Taketsuru, who learnt the art of whisky-making in Scotland, and Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory. Together, they laid the foundations for Japanese whisky production – with a clear goal: to combine the precision and craftsmanship of Scottish distilleries with the Japanese pursuit of perfection.

The Meiji Restoration, which opened Japan up to Western influences in the 19th century, also played a decisive role. It provided access to international techniques, which were further developed by Japanese distillers – a foundation upon which the industry continues to build to this day.

Japanese distilleries draw inspiration from traditional Scottish production methods, but adapt them with great care – for example, by using different still shapes, long fermentation periods and rare oak casks such as Mizunara or Sakura.
