Heavily peated barley malt is used, which gives the whisky its intense smoky aroma. The whisky is matured in carefully selected oak casks, and cold filtration is deliberately avoided. This ensures that the complex aromas and natural oils are fully preserved.

Old Ballantruan comes from the Highland village of Tomintoul, in the heart of Speyside. The region is famous for its many distilleries – yet hardly any of them venture into such intense peaty notes as Old Ballantruan. It is named after the Ballantruan spring, from which the water used in production is drawn.
